Chapter- 5
(Place Value and Face value)
Numbers showing on spike abacus helps to understand the number and its place value. Spike abacus is very helpful to understand the concept of magnitude and name of a number. We know that the spike-abacus represents the number of multi-digits where the digits are represented by the spikes of the abacus.

The spikes from right to left represent the places of the place values of the digits in increasing order i.e., 1, 10, 100, ………. etc.

These places are denoted by O (unit or ones), T (tens), H (hundreds), Th (thousands), H th (hundred thousands) and so on.............
From the above abacus we can count the beads from right to left and then write the exact number i.e., 643.

Chapter- 5
(Place Value and Face value)
PLACE VALUE
In math, every digit in a number has a place value.
Place value can be defined as the value represented by a digit in a number on the basis of its position in the number.
Here’s an example showing the relationship between the place or position and the place value of the digits in a number.
In 548,
5 is in hundreds place and its place value is 500,
4 is in tens place and its place value is 40,
8 is in ones place and its place value is 8.

FACE VALUE
Face value of a digit in a number is the digit itself.
More clearly, face value of a digit always remains the same irrespective of the position where it is located.

For example,
In 25486, the face value of 5 is 5.
Note:
1. For a digit in ones place, place value = face value
2. Place value of a digit  = face value x value of its place
3.The place value and face value of zero is always zero

Date 15/06/2020     SOCIAL STUDIES  Chapter 1   THE EARTH - OUR HOME NOW WATCH THE VIDEO. The earth on which we live is our home.  We make our houses on it.  We play and work on it.  We grow our food on it.  We build houses and buildings on it.  Like human beings, animals, birds and insects also live on the earth. Millions of plants and trees grow on it. The surface of the earth is made up of land and water. About three- fourths of the earth's surface is water and one fourth is land. As there is more water on its surface, the earth looks blue from space. That is why it is called the blue planet. The earth is made up of land, water and air. Life is possible on the earth because of these things. All human beings, animals and plants need air to live. The earth is surrounded by a layer of air. This layer of air is called the atmosphere. We cannot see air around us. We can only feel it. Assignment Read...
