Chapter - 1(Our Neighbours)

This is my house. I live here with my parents.
My friend, Raman, lives in the house next to mine.
My friends, Vikram and Kunal, live two houses away.
All of them are my neighbours.



Families, living in nearby houses, make a neighbourhood.
Children from my neighbourhood play together in the evening.

Our neighbours help us when we are in need of something.
We also help them when they need us.

They visit us when we are sick.

We sit and talk together.

They go to the schools which are far away from their homes.

They go to the schools by buses, cars, vans or rickshaws.

Some schools are big, some are small. In some villages, there are schools only up to class V. These are called the Primary Schools.

Schools up to class VIII are called the Middle Schools.

In towns and cities, there are big schools. Schools up to classes X and XII are called the Secondary and the Senior Secondary Schools.



We have a big secondary school near our house.

I study in that school. There are about 800 students in my school.

My school has a beautiful building.

It has a big playground too.






There are swings, slides and a see-saw in the playground. We play many games there.

At school, our teachers teach us many things.

We learn good habits and manners.

We learn to play and study together.

The school helps us in becoming good children.

We all pray to God.
We thank Him for everything we have.

People of different religions go to different places of worship.


The Hindus pray to God in the temple.

There are the idols of Shiva, Rama, Sita, Hanuman, Krishna, Durga and Ganesha.

The pujari looks after the temple.

People offer sweets and flowers to gods in the temple.

The holy books of the Hindus are the Ramayana and the Bhagvad Gita.

The Jains and the Buddhists go to their own temples to offer prayers.

The Muslims pray in a mosque.

They offer Namaaz (prayers).

The holy book of the Muslims is the Quran.

They worship Jesus Christ.


They go to the church on Sundays.


Their holy book is the Bible.


We must pray to God to thank Him for everything.


The worship of God gives us peace of mind.

It comes about twenty days after Dussehra.

On this day, Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshman had returned to Ayodhya after spending

People clean their houses before Diwali.


Houses and shops are lit with candles and small electric bulbs.


On this day, people wear new clothes.


They give gifts and sweets to friends and relatives.


At night, the Hindus worship Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth. Children play with

crackers and fireworks.

Holi is a festival of colours.

It is celebrated in the month of March.


Holi marks the victory of good over evil.


We celebrate Holi on two days.


On the first day, bonfires are lit in the evening to burn the Holika.

It is related to the story of Prahlad.

The next day, people apply colours like Abeer and Gulal on the faces of friends and relatives.

Children throw coloured water on the passers-by.

People sing and dance.

They offer sweets to each other. We really enjoy the Holi celebrations.

Chapter - 10 (Durga Puja)
Durga Puja is celebrated mainly in Bengal. Nowadays it is celebrated almost across the country in many cities and towns.

It is celebrated before Dussehra in the month of October.
People worship Durga, the Goddess of Shakti (strength).
Beautiful images of Goddess Durga are made for the festival.

These images of the Goddess Durga are decorated in huge tents known as Pandals. People gather here to worship the Goddess and Prasad (sweets and fruits) is distributed to all the people.

The celebration continues for four days.
People wear new clothes. They visit friends and relatives, and exchange gifts.

On Dussehra, the images of Goddess Durga are taken out in a long procession.
Finally, these idols are immersed in water.
This is also known as Bhasan or immersion.

Onam is also a harvest festival. It is celebrated in Kerala. On this day, people worship King Mahabali.
Boat races are held on Onam. Elephants are decorated and taken out in processions.

Guruparabs are important Sikh festivals.

The Sikhs celebrate the birthdays of their Gurus as Guruparabs.

Guru Nanak Dev was the first Guru. He was the founder of the Sikh religion.


There were nine Gurus after him. Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth Guru.

On Guruparab, people go to the Gurudwaras to pray.

Passages from the Guru Granth Sahib (holy book) are recited in the Gurudwaras.

People wear new clothes. Big processions are taken out.

Gurudwaras are lit with small lamps.

Houses are also lit with candles and electric bulbs.

Children play with crackers and fireworks during this festival.
