CHAPTER 2 The Lucky Leaf

SUMMARY
This story is about a girl name Rahila. In this story she is crying because she has lost her golden bangle. Her mother tells her to go outside to play. She goes outside and sits under the wood-apple tree which is next to the wall. She sits and counts the leaves of the tree. One leaf falls from the tree. The wind blows and carries it up into the air. She stands up and runs after the leaf. Soon the leaf falls into a hole. She picks up the leaf and finds her golden bangle under it. She laughs and takes the bangle as well as the lucky leaf to show her mother.

The Lucky Leaf

By Nicholas Horsburgh

Rahila is crying. She has lost her golden bangle. ‘Don't cry, Rahila,’ says Mum. ‘Go and Play.’
Rahila goes outside. She sits under the wood-apple tree. It is next to the wall. Rahila counts leaves on the tree. One, two, three, four....
One leaf is falling from the tree. The wind blows. It carries the leaf up in to the air. The leaf is now in front of her.
Rahila stands up. The wind starts again. The leaf dances up and down — left and right. It turns and turns! It spins like a top. It climbs above the roof!
‘What fun!’ says Rahila.
Rahila runs after the leaf. It moves in front of her and behind her.
Soon, the leaf falls into a hole. It is at the side of a rosebush. Rahila picks up the leaf. She finds her golden bangle under it. Rahila laughs. She takes the bangle and the lucky leaf to show Mum.

Poem-2 The Mulberry Bush

Here we go' round the mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush.
Here we go' round the mulberry bush,
So early in the morning.
There are the jobs we do all week,
Do all week,
Do all week.
These are the jobs we do all week,
So early every morning.
This is the way we wash our clothes,
Wash our clothes,
Wash our clothes.
This is the way we wash our clothes,
So early Monday morning.
This is the way we iron our clothes,
Iron our clothes,
Iron our clothes.
This is the way we iron our clothes,
So early Tuesday morning.

    Chapter- 4 Grandma
    SUMMARY
In this story the children are bored and do not know what to do with themselves. They worry their Grandma with questions, knowing fully well she cannot do any of those things. She answers their cheekiness with a ‘Can?’ question of her own: ‘Can you see the bird in the tree?’ She follows this with, ‘Now fly away and play with it.’ She is obviously sending them away so she can rest but her words also cleverly show the children that they too have limits to what they can do! She is firm but she smiles. So her lesson is gently delivered.

In this story, Grandma is sitting in her rocking chair with her eyes shut. The children looks at her and start giggling. She opens her eyes as they come to her and asked if they can do something. Grandma tells them that they can do anything like- writing, reading, playing, singing and dancing. Jessica asks grandma to dance. Grandma tells her that she is now old and her bones are weak. Then grandma tells them to play with a bird which is on the tree.
