CHAPTER 5: THE HUMAN BODY
Muscles
Our bones are covered with muscles. Muscles help the bones to move. A healthy person has strong muscles. A weak person has weak muscles.

Muscles help us to do a lot of activities.

Muscles and bones help a swimmer to swim. They help a cyclist to pedal. They help a cricketer to bowl.

Muscles help a coolie to carry load.

Muscles become strong when –

1. We take healthy food.

2. We use them regularly.

3. We do various exercises.
Watch the video...

Exercise
Exercise increases blood supply to muscles. Hence muscles become fit and strong. This in turn give healthy look to our body. Exercise also helps our body to grow.
Posture
The position of our body when we stand, sit or move is called posture.

Need for good posture

1. A good posture makes us look smart.

2. It keeps our body in proper shape.

3. It helps us to stay healthy.

How to keep good posture?

Human beings are known to be the “beast with brain”. Brain controls all the activities performed by body.
Brain
Brain is the most developed organ.
It is located in the skull.
It helps us to judge what is wrong and what is right. It control all the activities of our body.
Now watch the video...

Human Body
The human body is made-up of bones and muscles. All parts of our body are held tightly by bones. These bones give shape and support to our body. Muscles are attached to the bones. They help the bones to move. The outer part of body is covered with skin.
The Skeleton
The basic framework formed by bones is called the skeleton. Skeleton actually gives shape to our body. It supports and protect the internal organs. It help us to move, sit, stand and perform other functions. Our body skeleton has nearly 206 bones.

CHAPTER 1: PLANTS AROUND US
Climbers
Climbers have thin, long and weak stems.
They need support as their weak stems cannot bear the weight of the plant.
Life of such plant varies with nature.
Example : grapevine, money plant, bean and pea plant.

Creepers
Some plants have weak and thin stems.
These plants bear heavy fruits.
They cannot climb without support.
Hence, they creep on the ground.
These plants are thus called creepers.
Creepers live for one season only.
Example :
 watermelon, pumpkin and bottle guard.

Thorny Plants
Some plants have sharp, woody and pointed structures.
These structures save them from enemies.
Such plants are known as thorny plants.

Example :
 rose, cactus.

CHAPTER 1: PLANTS AROUND US
Normally all plants are associated with the colour green. Thus, we use the term ‘Greenery’ commonly for plants. Plants give us fresh air, food and wood for various purposes. Plants are found in different shapes and sizes. Some plants are small and some are big. Big plants usually grow high. Some plants are weak and some are strong. Almost all green plants prepare their own food.
Now watch this video....

Types of plants
Trees
Trees are tall plants with woody trunks.
Trees are strong. Most trees have branches.
Some trees bear flowers and fruits, some trees may not.
The roots of trees penetrate deep into the soil. Trees can live for years.

Example :
mango tree, peepal tree, banyan tree, pine tree.

Shrubs
Shrubs have thin and woody stems. They have many branches.
So they look bushy. Most shrubs live for years.

Example : rose, hibiscus, sunflower and cotton.

Herbs
Herbs have thin, soft and green stems. They are smaller than shrubs. They have no wood. Many herbs have medicinal use. Herbs live for a few months only.

Example :
 brinjal, tulsi, mint and spinach.

Assignment:
Study pages 6 and 7. Do the following questions in Science OCB.
